There is something comforting and inviting about the promise of a new year. Many of us look at it as a fresh start, an opportunity to become the version of ourselves that we aspire to be. However, this year we don’t need the added internal pressure to try and be the best versions of ourselves when we are all struggling just to be in a normal state of being.
The past two years have been difficult to say the least. This year, rather than setting goals to lose those last 10 pounds, or finish a project you’ve been putting off for years, let’s focus on healing our minds. This year, aim to preserve your energy and spend it only on things that make you happy or feel good. This time of year we lose ourselves in the idea of how to be better, how to do better- when we should be sharpening ourselves to honour who we already are and appreciate how far we’ve come. So, this year instead of making a list of goals, make a list of all the things you’ve accomplished the past two years to bring you to where you are today. No item is too small. Even if you just make a list of all the times you got out of bed when you really didn’t feel like taking on the day, no victory is too small.
Let’s make 2022 the year of taking a minute (or 10) to breath. This whole year should just be about taking a breather! Don’t worry about losing those last 10 pounds, or painting the bathroom walls a new colour. Pick up new hobbies, try a new recipe. Focus on making yourself feel whole again this year. Visualize your idea of peace. Write it down if that helps you achieve it. Spend time on yourself to get clarity on who you are and what you want out of life. What you need and what you value. Provide the space to become the healthiest version of yourself this year, whatever that may look like.
Above all else, go easy on yourself this new year. Make time to work on your mental health. Practice mindfulness and learn to be appreciative and grateful for the little things. Only you have the power to gain control of your own life and your happiness. Never forget that your own potential is limitless
